Do you think these men had a choice? Was it even possible to “retire” from the king’s service and slip away to a peaceful life in the country?

I think it was too late by the time it got to that point. I wonder why they would elevate themselves in the first place. Everyone during that time knew how dastardly the Tudors were given what they did to Richard III. I think it was a case of wanting to have power. I think it's interesting that More actually knew how great the danger was. Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment!

Having just watched Wolf Hall your wonderful post could not be more timely!

But yes, I think it had to do with power. And denial. I think these men thought they would be immune to the king’s capricious wishes.

I think everyone thought they could command those gales but he was a monster. I love Wolf Hall. It may be one of my favorite series ever.

Fascinating read! Power is seductive and, as JoAnn says, maybe each one thought they would be the exception to the rule and could cross the King with impunity - wrong!

Wrong, indeed, Kisane! The second they were not useful to H8, his unbridled wrath turned on them. Thank you for reading and joining the exploration!
